Simone Tholens is a post doctoral research associate at the BORDERLANDS project at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, European University Institute, where she is researching the diffusion of rules, norms, practices and institutions in EU relations vis-à-vis its Southern Neighborhood.

She is also adjunct professor of International Relations and Conflict Management at the Johns Hopkins University, SAIS Bologna, where she teaches the course “Principles and Practices of Conflict Management”.

She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the European University Institute, an M.A. from the University of Amsterdam, and a B.A. from the University of Oslo.

Her research deals with the transmission of international norms to domestic and local actors, particularly in the context of security governance. By adopting an agency-based constructivist approach, she focuses on the power of norms at play when international actors get involved in post-war peacebuilding and other forms of external intervention, notably in the areas of Small Arms Control, Security Sector Reform, and Energy policy in the Western Balkans, South East Asia, and the MENA region.
